I spent a few days in Berlin recently on a business trip. I've been to Berlin a few times before and TBH, I've never really warmed to the place. There's a lot of history there for sure, especially from the Third Reich and Cold War eras, and that is fascinating to discover and reflect on. But from an aesthetic point of view, I find the city rather uninspiring. It's certainly hard to photograph, at least if the objective is something "scenic" rather than brutalistic. Here are few attempts with my S5 and 20-60 anyhow.

Excellent set of pictures, Paul. It allows you to get an idea of the cold and decadent atmosphere of that city, especially in the autumn and winter months.

For me these photos awaken a feeling of nostalgia, since I lived in Berlin for three and a half years, from 2006 to 2010. I still have some friends there and I miss life in the Kreuzberg neighborhood.

I’ve been to Berlin a few times and always liked it. Of course there is lots of history there to bring back all the bad times memories, but to me modern Berlin seems the opposite of that.

Berlin always fascinated me , I was stationed there during the Cold War in the mid 70’s , when Checkpoint Charlie was a reality and East Berlin was verboten (unless on an official trip). It is not a beautiful city in the sense that say Budapest is beautiful, but it tells a story of a city with a dark past and full of intrigue for those who have lived there; who like myself were constantly aware of the menace even travelling on the U bahn and stopping at Friedrichstrasse (then in the East) to see East German Soldiers on the platform armed to the teeth. Like a colleague who was approached by an GDR Spy. Like Teuffelsberg the woman made mountain , constructed by the women of Berlin from the rubble of the city after WW2 atop Which stood the listening station , now derelict. I have visited twice in the last decade and was captivated by memories and colours of Autumn .

Fascinating story. I can see that Berlin is an "interesting" city, but not a beautiful one.
