Nice!! Thanks, Xavier. This here is the only rumor that I read about the 18-40mm since the 8th of August:
Panasonic officially displayed the LUMIX S 18-40mm F4.5-6.3 lens at the Shanghai show! - L mount system camera rumors and news
At the Shanghai Photographic Equipment Exhibition Panasonic displayed the LUMIX S 18-40mm F4.5-6.3 lens. Here are the images!www.l-rumors.com
The only other info I've seen is that DxO have announced that PhotoLab 7 will support the 18-40mm lens in their September update.I'm interested in getting the Lumix S9, but would love to get it as a kit with the 18-40mm. Impatiently waiting for the release, and wondering if there's rumors on when the lens would launch
Nice!! Thanks, Xavier.
Followed the link in comment from the post, and it seems like the lens is already in hands of content creators who are reviewing the lens. Hopefully, this means launch is imminent!
If a reviewer is reading, would love to see comparison to the Sigma 45mm f2.8
He just almost had his undoubtly very thourogh review ready, and now Jenny tells him he REALLY has to compare with the Sigma 45mmI am guessing you can't tell us anything yet @Richard Wong ??
I think that is a better comparison for people buying their first Lumix. I own the Sigma 17mm and the 20-60mm, so that's probably the main reason. Additionally, having a compact lens is more important to me as I think about building a kit for S9, so the 45mm is what I'm considering vs. the 18-40mm. I didn't consider the 20-60mm as a lens that would "go with the S9 body" for a travel kit: it is not incognito when extended.Just curious, why do you want to see a comparison with the Sigma 45mm? I would have thought 20-60 is the better comparison.
I meant the 18-40mm is under 5cm from rumors, which will bring the S9 + lens to under 12cm in depth - aka. will fit into normal bag in my bookThe S9 body is around 5cm, and the 45mm and 20-60mm are both under 5cm.
The Sigma 24mm f3.5 might also be worth considering. It's just a few mm longer than the 45mm f2.8 so almost identical. And, while the 20-60mm is light, I just can't easily fit it in most non-camera bag handbags! LoL (May be interesting for some: a lot of women's handbag are under 15cm in depth externally and 12cm internally. The S9 body is around 5cm, and the 45mm and 20-60mm are both under 5cm. I am inclined to think that's not a coincidence ; fashion aside, I've found that bringing a normal handbag is a lot "easier" passing through security or allow me to bring camera into spaces with less scrutiny. )
The 45mm is around 46mm tall, and the 20-60mm is 87mm tall. While it is just 4cm, it takes up much more room in 3-dimension. I definitely fit more into the "Amateur who wants a lightweight kit that can push my skill limits", than a seasoned professional who have more technical requirements though!

Yes, I think that's spot on. If compactness is the goal, which would you choose/recommend?hey Jenny,
so what you are interested in is more about the pros and cons of choosing 18-40mm vs 45mm for a S9 user, rather than purely doing my usual image quality comparison test (assuming you have watched one of my lens review)?
A bit like prime vs zoom, what is better video, is that correct?
Personally I would like to see a wide angle L-Mount zoom shootout with the 18-40, 20-60, 14-28, and 16-28 lenses. Or at least the three Panasonic offerings.Just curious, why do you want to see a comparison with the Sigma 45mm? I would have thought 20-60 is the better comparison.
I'm with you, this is not a factor just for women. I wandered around Rome a couple of weeks ago with the S9 and a 20-60mm in my Adidas fanny pack, it did not silp easily in and out of that fanny pack. The 18-40mm would have been much better. And, while the 20-60mm is light, I just can't easily fit it in most non-camera bag handbags! LoL
Same thing with me and the small camera bags I prefer to use... my favorite models for the Sigma fp were (I think) originally created for videocams, so an extra couple of cm is enough to make the camera hard to extract, if it fits at all. And reducing the bag bulk is vital to how long I can comfortably walk around shooting.I'm with you, this is not a factor just for women. Or also the 17mm F4 from Sigma. That's the lens I would buy right know alongside the S9. The knowledge of the upcoming 18-40 even stops me from wanting the 17/4. The size seems similar and also does focal length and aperture on the wide. The Sigma 24mm f3.5 might also be worth considering. It's just a few mm longer than the 45mm f2.8 so almost identical. Yes, I have been going out with the S9 and 3 Sigma lenses (24mm, 45mm & 90mm) and it's all quite small and light in a small bag. But If I go for a walk with just the camera in hand, I take either the 24mm or 45mm. So in the latter situation the 18-40mm zoom would be more versatile. I am trying to not talk myself into this though!!Even better 17/4+24/3.5+45/2.8 vs 18-40. The smallest, available primes with AF are covering comparable focal length, but with greater aperture with rising focal length. Of course with the downside of being three lenses which you have to buy, carry and switch.
Hi Charles, I don't understand how to calculate the maximum range of a lens with the Hybrid zoom. I mean, If with the 28-200mm lens the hybrid zoom reaches 625mm, it is practically three times more than the maximum focal length of the lens, right? Also remember the 18-40mm becomes a 18-60mm with Hybrid Zoom.
When you set up Hybrid Zoom you select the Minimum Image Size. It can be 12MP, 6MP or 2.5MP. I generally use 12MP so I get a pretty good picture (iPhone like), and this gives a magnification of 1.4x. So the 18-40mm becomes a 18-56mm (not 60mm like I posted from memory). For video it is a little different, if you are shooting 4K the magnification is 1.55x so the 18-40mm lens becomes 18-62mm, with no loss in the 4K resolution.Hi Charles, I don't understand how to calculate the maximum range of a lens with the Hybrid zoom. Shouldn't you reach about 120mm with the 18-40mm lens? Is the calculation correct?
Thank you, Charles, the size of 2,5 pmx is not usable for me. Even the 6 mpx size is in the limit (I think it is still OK in terms of quality to print photos of 20 x 30 cm with 5 mpx, if I am not wrong). When you set up Hybrid Zoom you select the Minimum Image Size. The 625mm for the 28-200mm lens is based on using the Minimum Image Size of 2.5MP.
