45 reasons to upgrade from the S5ii to the S1iie

I did read somewhere, after doing some comparisons for myself, that there is also a significant downside to that nice EVF of 5.7mp. While using the same batteries, it uses significant more power.

I know the S1 IIe is more power efficient when not using the evf. Would that offset it enough? So that the power consumption is not worse ? I can do about 3 days with 2 full batteries. Doing like few 100 shots, some times with high resolution mode. And that is not that much battery life in my opinion. And I do switch off my camera all the time.

If I compare that with my old Nikon dslr it was like going for weeks on one battery. That is a downside for all mirrorless cameras. I know.
Yes, the old DSLR times where different in terms of battery life. But then you can also compare to the SLR times, where I changed the battery one time per year…
OK, the S1R is not power saving, especially if you consider the huge battery. But in studio work (using battery grip) I normally have enough power for the day with a result of about 1000 pictures. That is ok.
And even with more power saving cameras like my OM1 I always take a spare battery with me. So in summary the battery topic is (for me!) a bit overrated.

Summer 2021 with several discount actions to, in that time I compared the S5 - S1 - S1R models
I looked through the viewfinders in the store of these camera's.
Just the difference in brightness / quality alone of the EVF, made up my mind to go for a "professional" 5.7mp EVF camera model.

The relative little price difference alone between S1 or S1R, I immediately made the choice for S1R.

I decided for my S1R in Summer 2020, after the first lockdown. There where big discounts everywhere and the S1R was available for 2400€! After 5 years of usage I never regret to buy it and it works still today!

The price one year later (summer 2021) of the S1R was also € 2400,-
I combined it with the Lumix S 24-105/F4.0 lens.
But on top of it ! - I also got a € 400,- money cashback discount, directly calculated within the shop.
So the total combination S1R camera + Lumix S 24-105/F4.0 lens did cost me € 3100,-

There are all kinds of power saving settings. (I am not a videographer - mostly just pictures).
Using a S1R - e.g. I changed the refresh rate of the back-screen from 60 fps to 30 fps.
The EVF from 120 fps to 60 fps.
Auto off screen / sleep mode - one minute

And always having one or two "AliExpress" spare batteries in my bag. Just "for the case" I have to exchange.
(Those 3500 mA "AliExpress" batteries much more cheap, and do last longer than the original 3050 mA Panasonic battery).

Have bought two batteries in September 2021 including a charger. 3 months later after I bought my S1R camera (and Panasonic battery).
So about the same age "now" as the original battery.
However I always use the Panasonic charger itself, as the way of LED-lights function of the included charger is not very clear, by the charging state.
Charging by the Panasonic charger itself do give me better confidence.

Have numbered my batteries 1, 2, 3 - (1 is the original).
And use them by the numbered order 1 ---> 2 ---> 3 ---> 1 ---> 2 ---> 3 etc.
So over some years all batteries are about evenly distributed in the number of charging cycles.

Still using today all the "first buy" batteries.
I get the impression, -when not in use-, that the original battery has a higher "self-discharge" rate than the third-party batteries.
And maybe is the first battery that shall be at the end of life, and need to be exchanged for a new copy?

As for the quality of the batteries, "for me" there is no reason to buy an original Panasonic brand battery again.
It is not better than those cheap AlieExpress copies.

Thanks to you, I've checked all my 10-11 years old batts for any signs of swelling.
One OEM batt even had cracked open outer shell inside my cam.
No damage to the camera
Four OEM batts landed in the special bin, plus some third party ones.
Newell have a good reputation for the quality batts.
I may buy some of those, and as a precaution, I'll get rid of the rest of my old batts.
They've got also 3500mAh batts for Lumix S for less than $30 each.

FWIW, @Oíche was talking several months ago about batteries with built-in USB-C charging circuitry. I was skeptical at the time, but I wanted an extra battery for my friend's wedding video back in June, so I figured I'd give one of them a try. I ended up with the Smallrig:

- which as far as I can tell looks identical to batteries from several other companies on eBay, except for the label and the case color (and the Smallrig is available in an orange case, just like the eBay ones I found).

As I said, I was skeptical, but so far it's worked just fine - and having a built-in charger is nice, I can charge it anywhere there's a USB-C cable I can use, which makes one less cable and piece of equipment to carry around.

My preference is charging outside of camera.
BTW, I've heard about exploding batts inside camera while charging.

I guess, you don't understand the message of @Travis Butler
The battery he is using do have it's own USB-C slot. It is not charged inside the camera itself.
Just using an ordinary USB-charger + USB-cable (e.g. the charger of a mobile phone).
Or e.g. USB-slots in today’s trains, or power sockets in hotels, with an extra USB output port.

I've had some cheap AliExpress batteries, but I got quickly messages on the screen that the voltage was low, so afterwards that I only used Panasonic batteries...

Until I also discovered the Smallrig batteries. I like the brand so I have them a try.

Very good batteries, very stable and that you can charge them just by USB is a nice bonus.

I have 2 of them, and when I would need new batteries I would buy them again.

(Video uses a lot of juice, for photograpic shoots I only take 1 reserve with me).

I can confirm, those batteries are very convenient and good. Throw in a small powerbank, and charge them on the go, without need for a charger.
