Sigma 50mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary (I-Series)

I just got this so haven't had much of a chance to really test it out yet but since it's new and there's very little out there in terms of sample images, I'll add a few quick shots from this morning. All but the sunrise are wide open and the first one is at minimum focus distance.

In time I plan to do some side-by-side tests with the Lumix 50/1.8 but I plan to keep them both since the Lumix is a shade faster, lighter and better sealed. The Sigma is about the same size and the hood from the 35/2 DG DN fits it perfectly - it's own hood is exactly the same but about 6mm longer.

Those are rather lovely images. I've also just purchased the same lens (I really enjoy the Sigma I series lenses) but have had no time to try it yet - will be very happy if I can get anywhere close to these.

Yes, the I-series are great. I still can't help but feel that for the price this 50mm should be a little faster and should have a closer minimum focus distance - either of which would make it stand out a little more and significantly increase it's usefulness.

I had mine back in the box for a while as I was waiting to see if I'd have to physically return it to get the discounts which were announced just two days after buying it, but now it's free to be used and to see what it can do. I took it to the local fayre yesterday evening and got a few more shots.

This seems to be your thread entirely! ;-)

Nice photos!
Yes. Honestly I don't anticipate this lens being a big seller. It's not that much cheaper than the faster Art 50mm and build quality and aperture ring are the only advantages it has over the much cheaper (and faster) Lumix 50/1.8 which is often cheaper still when included as a kit lens. It's a hard purchase to justify really so I don't think many people will buy it.

I won't buy this lens because I own the Pentax 43mm Limited, the Carl Zeiss Planar 50/1.4, the Pentax K 50/1.2 and others. Despite not even grooving with that focal length!

But it's still good to see your shots. :)

Many thanks. If I'm honest, of the eight lenses I've bought since joining the L-mount this is the only one I've had second thoughts about, but I do enjoy using it. 50mm is my favourite focal length and if I went back to only having the Lumix 50/1.8 as a native prime at that focal length then I'd feel something was missing (in terms of handling and pleasure in use, not image quality). Maybe I should have held out for the Art but then that lens is huge and would lose a lot of use due to that.

Thats why i opted for 45/2.8. Could get it relatively cheap, so much smaller and a joy to use. Just a tiny bit wider. Used Lumix S 50 woud be 75€ cheaper and more than a stop faster, fully WR. But the tiny Sigma is a joy to use.

I never considered the Lumix S 50mm f1.8 but seeing they are for sale in "as new" condition for £200 it could be a no brainer, and it's nice for videography given the human eye focal length.

I'm not sure how much use any of my Pentax MF lenses will get nevermind the 50mm unless I enjoy it more on FF.

None of these AF on L-mount. The Pentaxes are soft unless stopped down. The K50 f1.2 is more of a dreamy lens with a slightly different purpose, you only really buy it for the fully or nearly open aperture and the bokeh.

The Lumix 50/1.8 is also superb, optically maybe even better than the Sigma. If you go for one then make sure to check it for fogging and to make sure it's a sharp copy. Of the three I've used one had fogging (but was excellent), one was very, very soft and the other (the one I have now) is perfect except for some internal dust.

I still use my Pentax (and other) manual 50mm lenses, now more than ever as they're so much better on the S5 than on an APS-C Pentax DSLR. I wouldn't be without at least one AF fast fifty on the L-mount though - partly for the AF itself and partly because they're so much sharper wide open, they give a different look.
