Roadtrip Italy

I'm taking a two week road trip (almost first week done) with my son to Italy and will try to post some pictures here as well. To not hijack the June and July image thread I will post them here. I try to do 3 pictures per significant place and/or day :-) But don't call me on that.

First thing out of the way... I did not limit myself to which lenses to take with me. It's a road trip from home, with a family saloon car, with just two people, so no restrictions on gear this trip. However... it is so terrible hot here that I do limit myself to one lens per outing as I can't stand a backpack in 35+ celsius temperatures. If I use a backpack my back is wet in minutes. So I got a small backpack but in these conditions it is useless to me. My son doesn't bother the temperature so much and uses his backpack. But I don't want to burden him with lenses so he only takes the water bottles and snacks.

So I had to choose a single lens for every outing away from the car. For high profile places I took the S Pro 16-35 (Bologna, Florence, Ferrari museums, Pisa), 24-60 on walks in the forest and to Lucca, 24-105 to San Miniato and for today to Funicolare Montecatini as well. At one Airbnb we had a big garden with marvellous scenery on the Tuscany hills I used everything :).

I learned a lot about my preferences.. only in Florence I was too limited with the 16-35, I wish I had the 100mm with me, or at least the 24-60. The other thing I learned was that 24 is often wide-angle enough for me, but at least 20 would. So the best compromise might have been the 20-60 all along, but I do not really like the images and would take the 16-35 over it any day. I'm shooting a lot at F8, so 28-200 instead of the 24-105 will be a no brainer. I did use the 70-300 for some shots, and the vacation ain't over yet (almost half way).

W drove from the Netherlands to the Black Forest near Baden-Baden and took a detour to drive along the river Rheine.

Day 8 - (today 27-6) Funicolare di Montecatini Terme
We had a bit of an easy day because it was (according to my car in the shade) 37 celsius. But still fun :)
The Funicolare is from 1898, and still going strong.

Day 8 - Bonus picture
This is the village Castello di Larciano, taken from the road on the way up to our b&b. We saw this castle the last 5 days, and it is closed during our stay, it will be open to visitors on the day that we leave. Anyway, I also took a 96mp high-res shot, and this one will go on the wall. This is Tuscany for me. Olive trees, castles, mountains

Day 7 - Florence
I love Italy, and appreciate all your pictures very much. I hope you enjoy the rest of your holiday/vacation. Of my times in Italy, once I was able to spend a week in Florence with a friend who was working there, so I have a soft spot for that city, and pictures of Ponte Vecchio.

Very nice pictures. It was very, very hot the last time I was in Italy, in Venice two years ago. This summer we will be back, but stops on a cruise rather than a road trip.

I plan to take the 16-35/4, Sigma 24-70/2.8 and 50/1.8, maybe some others.

So nice to see your images of beautiful Italian architecture, landscapes and colours. So many of those perched hill towns in Tuscany, San Gimignano was one I particularly enjoyed visiting while staying in a Agritourismo some years ago. Enjoy the rest of your trip, looking forward to seeing more of it.

I will update the thread on Sunday.. with images of Siena, Civita di Bagnoregio, Pompeii, Vesuvius (which we climbed to the crater). Visited the Vatican, Colloseum, etc. And some more random Rome.

We just finished a 3 day/4 nights stay in Rome. Tomorrow morning a 9 hour drive to Switzerland near Bern to stay over at my friends house, and Saturday we drive home (7 hours).

After Siena I knew the sites we were going to visit and a backpack was not bearable with 37 Celsius in the shade. So almost exclusively used the 24-105 as it was the most versatile in my kit.

A lighter lens (28-200) would not have made a difference at all. The bag it self was the issue. My son had a small backpack with water bottles, and I sure did not want to add lenses to that. So just carried the camera al day with me. And that was fine. F4 was no problem at all.

I should have have taken a messenger bag …
