Lumix S-Series Serial Numbers?

The Rigger

LMF-Patron Gold
Does Panasonic put a serial number on their lenses? And if so, where the heck is it?

I'll admit this may be an Idiot-level question, but frankly I'm stumped. I'm recording al the serial numbers on all the new S5 gear for insurance purposes, but I can't for the life of me locate any sort of identifying numbers on my Lumix lenses, and believe me, I've *thoroughly* examined them, short of actually disassembling them. I would've thought that Panasonic would follow convention and serialize their lenses on the camera mount, but NOOOoooooo... Nice shiny chrome bayonets, unsullied by any numerical etchings or printing.

I've got the 50mm f/1.8 and the 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6, and as far as I know, they're not counterfeits.

I mean, they put a serial number on the AC-10 power supply and the DCC17 battery converter, ferpetesake...

I think that Pete answered this question in the DPReview forum:

Well, I'll be... Guess I need to get my eyeglasses prescrition updated; either that or get a stronger magnifying glass. Thanks, Xaviergut.

EDIT: I'm intrigued by the note in that DPR thread that the serial number of the lens might be in the EXIF data of the photos... Gonna have to investigate that further.

  1. Take the lens cap off
  2. Look at the opposite side of where the lens contact pins are

Yeah, that's what I did, Dirk. My mistake was looking at the metal band, where almost every other lens maker engraves their serial numbers, and not at the plastic, where the almost-invisible-to-me numbers are. Silly me.

I did have to snap a photo with my phone and blow it up quite a lot to read the numbers...

Ha ha! That's exactly what I had to do in order to see the numbers and record them on the My Panasonic page for warranty purposes.
