Predator

This coyote was perhaps 50-75 feet from my fence, and while I was photographing him he was exchanging long looks with my dog, which is larger but not by much. We have had several attacks in recent weeks in the area, with some smaller dogs either being injured severely or simply not surviving. Last night my neighbor & his dog were stalked on the walking path. They are lovely animals, but they have become quite aggressive in the recent weeks. I suspect the state will have to step in sooner or later.

This is a 100% crop - probably should have had the 150-600 mounted, but this image does show the incredible detail the S-Pro 70-200 f/2.8 is capable of.

Nice picture. They are also a problem in my area. A big Coyote jumped our back fence and was in the back yard recently. We have a large dog and she ran it out. This is not supposed to be their most aggressive season so I don't know what's up.

I think this pack may have relocated recently. We do have some construction activity about 1 mile away that is removing a bunch of prairie land.

And, apparently today is predator day. This was with the 150-600 @ 600mm, 100% (deep) crop. AF was very hit-and-miss here. The branches were really playing havoc with the exact focus point. I started with AFC, and then moved to AFS, and that might have helped, but by then he was not really paying attention to me and thus I did get any “eyes-wide-open” shots. I did enhance the eyes with Capture One’s Iris Enhance feature.

A group of coyotes walked up our street in the wee hours this morning. I didn’t hear or see them, but their yelping woke my wife, and she got a brief glimpse of them in the dark. We see or hear coyotes here about once a month. We keep our cat indoors only, and we don’t have a dog.

Habit loss is the usual reason given for the increasing sightings of coyotes & other wild animals in urban/suburban areas.

I also have a theory that the recent trend in the U.S. of people owing smaller dogs compared to past years may be another reason. Smaller dogs are less effective at scaring wild animals away, and coyotes also consider small dogs as a food source. Again, just my theory. It’s a jungle out there.

After I receive my LUMIX S 70-300mm lens I’ll add coyotes my list of potential photo subjects (if I’m lucky). Note to self: Approach with extreme caution!

Yes, the “small COVID dogs” phenomenon probably does entice more coyotes into suburban neighborhoods.
